I really want to receive a Craigslist “missed connection.” Where should I hang out?
I surveyed the last two weeks’ worth of Craigslist missed connections and uncovered some incredibly academic data:
If you are a man looking for a man, it might not shock you that the 24 Hour Fitness on Van Ness is incredibly popular on the Missed Connections board (5 separate postings), as well as is anywhere in the general vicinity of Church and Market (waiting for Muni, crossing the street, driving in cars, et al … 10 separate postings). However, it might surprise you to learn that almost 1/10th of the postings I reviewed took place at chain coffee shops. Check out your nearby Starbucks or Peets!
If you’re a straight male, hang out in the Mission; the majority of ads on the “w4m” page are from bars on Guerrero and Valencia, with 500 Club, Elbo Room, and Kilowatt as particular standouts. Bottom of the Hill is another popular missed connections spot (3 separate postings).
Men who like women, on the other hand, strongly prefer methods of transportation to nightlife (I guess when they’re out at night, they’re more interested in getting wasted than making a deep, meaningful missed connection?). Seriously, all of these eyes off the road are making me slightly concerned for my safety. Men are on the lookout on the Cal Train (4 separate postings), on the N Judah (5), from their car (6), in parking garages (2) … the list continues.
Craigslist Lesbians: No offense, but you don’t know how to utilize the missed connections board very well. The “w4w” board has a significantly lower amount of postings than the other boards, and most ads are just rants about lost love under headings like, “I love US, but I don’t miss you.”
Across all types of normative sexual boundaries: WTF is up with Safeway? EVERYONE seems to be looking for people they saw at Safeway. Seriously. Safeway (especially the one at Church and Market) should start hosting singles nights.
