die_hard_with_a_vengeance_ver4.jpgOn the same day that word came down that more layoffs were planned at the San Francisco Chronicle, Bay City News is reporting that arson investigators are looking in to The Case Of The Exploding Chronicle Rack. From BCN:

San Francisco police are investigating a small explosion Monday night that destroyed a San Francisco Chronicle newspaper rack in the city’s Sunset District.

A resident reported hearing “a loud bang” outside his home near the corner of Taraval Street and 37th Avenue at about 8:50 p.m., police spokeswoman Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said.

Officers arrived minutes later to find the rack on its side and broken into three pieces, Tomioka said.

“The container appeared to have exploded and burst at its seams,” she said.

A bomb squad investigated and concluded that some kind of homemade liquid explosive concoction may have been used, as there was no evidence of charring or burning, Tomioka said.

No suspects were seen and no arrests have been made.

Tomioka said police are not aware of any other similar incidents recently. An arson investigation is ongoing.

It is wrong that we’re visualizing a remake of Die Hard 3, with Chronicle Editor Ward Bushee reluctantly paired with Media Workers Guild rep Carl Hall as they race around the city trying to stop bigger and bigger explosions? OK, who do we cast in the Jeremy Irons role?
