5:06 PM: A bomb scare shut down an intersection in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood for about an hour and a half this afternoon, police said.
A bomb squad was dispatched to the intersection of Turk and Leavenworth streets at 2:25 p.m. after a storeowner called saying someone had briefly entered his store and left behind a package that made him suspicious, police spokesman Officer Samson Chan said.
The intersection was shut down to allow the bomb squad to investigate, Chan said. The package was determined to be harmless at about 4 p.m. and the streets were reopened.
4:21 PM: The San Francisco Police Department has sent a bomb squad to investigate a suspicious package in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood.
The intersection of Leavenworth and Turk streets has been shut down by the activity.
Police received a call at 2:25 p.m. from a storeowner who felt that the package, which had been left in his business by a person who had briefly walked in, was suspicious, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Sampson Chan said.
Chan did not have details on the package but said it may be a backpack.
Officers arrived within minutes and closed down the streets as a precaution, Chan said.
“They don’t take any shortcuts,” Chan said.
The intersection was still closed at about 4 p.m.
