Commercial building owners in San Francisco would have to monitor their buildings’ energy use as part of an effort to promote energy efficiency under new legislation proposed today.
An ordinance introduced by Mayor Gavin Newsom and co-sponsored by Supervisor Bevan Dufty would require owners of non-residential buildings to determine how much energy is being used and publicly disclose the figures each year.
It would also require energy efficiency audits for buildings of at least 5,000 square feet every five years.
Newsom said the legislation, if approved, would lower energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create green jobs.
“Without more energy- and resource-efficient buildings in San Francisco, we will not meet our aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets,” Newsom said in a statement.
