Thursday, January 13: If there was ever a way to back up your “I’m a guitar god” claim, having a six-string named after you might be it. Joe Satriani knows what that feels like. See the master do his thing at the Fox Theater on Thursday. Tickets are $39.50, show starts at 8pm.
Friday, January 14: Socially conscious bands never rubbed San Francisco the wrong way, and The English Beat aren’t any different. The legendary ska group continues to bring a punky-reggae party everywhere they go with original songs like “Mirror in the Bathroom” and “Best Friend.” See them at Bimbo’s 365 at 8pm on Friday, tickets are $22.
Saturday, January 15: After re-releasing their debut album, Dashboard Confessional embarked on their 10th anniversary tour. Actually, it’s just frontman Chris Carrabba putting on the show solo, but his acoustic preachings should be enough for any fan. He’ll be at the Regency Ballroom on Saturday, playing their full debut album and other classics. Shows starts at 8pm, tickets are $25.
Saturday, January 15: While Rebelution may not be the most authentic brand of reggae, they still pump out vibes that make for an irie time. The Santa Barbara band will be at the Fox Theater on Saturday with Iration, tickets are $20. Show starts at 8:00pm.

That’s just not fair! Kanye West and Jay-Z dropped their first joint single, “HAM” last night, and with some fire power like that it’s hard to compete. It’s a fast paced, in your face flow and beat, but they handle it with ease. What’s “HAM” stand for? Listen to the chorus, above. The single will be featured on their upcoming mini joint album appropriately called Watch the Throne.
She’s back! On Monday Britney Spears dropped her first single in years, “Hold It Against Me,” and she’s ready to dance. The synth heavy tune has traces of trance and a cheesy attempt at dubstep, but I guess that’s what you get when you team up with producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Listen to it here. It sounds better than her old bubble-gum pop stuff to me.
The first single from the fifth and final album from The Streets, “OMG,” has leaked, and he’s going out with a bang. On the album’s website a statement written in first person (presumably by Mike Skinner) describes the record as “dancing music to drink tea to” and the opposite of “dark and futuristic.” Sounds like a nice funky time. Computers and Blues drops February 18th.
I knew this was coming, and I’m so glad it did. A dubstep remix of “Bass Down Low” by The Cataracs and Dev is only fitting, and I believe Proper Villains did a swell job. Have a listen and download it here.

Trent Reznor, frontman of Nine Inch Nails, has announced that he will be creating the music for the novel turned upcoming film, Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. After his score for The Social Network was nominated for a Golden Globe, the expectations are high, and Reznor knows it. In an interview with PBS a while back, Trent Reznor noted the success of his first score then said, “there’s nowhere to go but down from here!”
Late last week you might have heard that Adam Yauch, aka MCA of the Beastie Boys, had defeated the cancer that he discovered just last year. While such news is great to hear, Adam says those reports were ‘exaggerated.’ He is still receiving treatment for the tumor that had developed in his parotid gland, but says he’s “grateful for all the positive energy people are sending” his way.
In Rolling Stone’s latest issue, they report that Lil Wayne‘s “The Carter IV” is expected to move 1 billion copies in its first week. You read that correctly, billion. He will be the first person to reach such numbers if that in fact happens.
Children of famous musicians have a curse: their parents name helps and hurts them in so many different ways. Take Sean Lennon for example, son of the one and only John. After launching his debut tour with his band – aka girlfriend – Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, he got a mediocre review of their first show. The duo will be in SF on Jan 25th at Café du Nord if you want to see for yourself.
About a year ago, Radiohead put on a benefit show for those hit by the Haiti earthquake. Bidding on the tickets was rightfully high, but now you can watch and download an audience member videotape of the 24 song set here. Los Angeles locals like Justin Timberlake and Drew Barrymore’s bids helped the show raise $572,754 for Oxfam.
