The theme for this week’s column is nostalgia, in many forms.
First, a trip back to the 1960s… One of our local merchants, Paul’s Hat Works, will be going back in time for their November display with a special “Mad Men” theme (if you’re not watching this TV show, get on it!). They’re also looking for live models to work the windows. So if your inner Don Draper is dying to get out, this one’s for you.
If you like to go back further the 1960s, then you might want to stop in Garden Spot Antiques on Clement at 31st Avenue. After 40 years in business, the owner passed away recently. When he was alive, he was apparently a little crotchety, unwilling to actually sell any of his inventory. But now it’s being liquidated so if antiquing is your passion, you’ll want to stop in and “pay your respects”.
No one got nostalgic for the old de Young Museum when the new one opened in 2005 (well, they did keep the lions thankfully). So to celebrate their 5th birthday as the “new” de Young, they’re letting people in this Saturday for just $5. A bargain price for viewing the permanent collection, don’t ya think? (Impressionist show not included)
In movie news, Jodie Foster narrates the new show “Life: A Cosmic Story” (trailer) at Morrison Planetarium at the Academy of Sciences, opening November 6. Join the former star of “Contact” for a look at the key events like the Big Bang, that set the stage for life.
