VERDICT_mehserle.jpgCourt officials have pushed back the sentencing date for former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on Thursday for fatally shooting an unarmed passenger early in the morning on Jan. 1, 2009.

The sentencing was originally scheduled for Aug. 6 but is now slated for Nov. 5 at 8:30 a.m., according to representatives for Los Angeles Superior Court.

Mehserle, 28, faces 5 to 14 years for shooting 22-year-old Oscar Grant III on a platform at the Fruitvale BART station after he responded to a fight on a train.

An Alameda County Superior Court judge moved the trial to Los Angeles last year due to the controversy surrounding it and the extensive attention it received in the Bay Area.

Mehserle is white, and Grant was black.
