Happy Earth Day! Here’s some trash.

We can all agree that pot is a bit of nearly-harmless fun; slight less dangerous and irritating than booze. A far greater threat: discarded bags, bottles, cigarettes, and heaps and heaps of whatnot, littering the hillside in Golden Gate Park. It was a remarkable show of cooperation: from every corner of San Francisco, volunteers came together to carefully lay their plastic debris in the grass. Well done, comrades.

Yesterday’s delightful climate drew a big smelly mass to Hippie Hill, just off of Haight Street (and a five-minute walk from a police station), and with the crowds came garbage. Lots of it. But they also brought drum circles, hula-hoops, hackey sacks, hibachis, guitars, footballs, transients, tiny dogs, and bottle rockets; so, you know, it wasn’t all bad (see: this).

And even if you don’t like any of those things, you reasonable thing, there were plenty of nearly-nude, vulnerable young people. So at least you could leer while you sulked. Look at that lovely torso! Just try not to think about the lifestyle that it’s chosen to pursue. Ah, what a curse, that our longing is strongest for that which we long to disdain.

Now pardon us while we go air out our lungs.
