handcuffs.JPGA San Francisco woman was arrested this week after allegedly pepper-spraying a Nordstrom security guard while trying to steal an expensive purse and wallet, police said.

Shirel Jean Smith, 20, was arrested Tuesday for robbery, assault with pepper spray, possession of burglary tools, theft with a prior conviction and giving a false name to a police officer, Twin Cities police Sgt. Michael Norton said.

Norton said a security guard at the Nordstrom Corte Madera store saw a woman shoplifting a Jimmy Choo purse and wallet valued at $2,345 at about 7 p.m. Tuesday.

When the store’s security guards tried to detain the woman, she sprayed one of them with pepper spray, Norton said.

Twin Cities police took the woman into custody and identified her through fingerprints.

Smith was booked into jail on $50,000 bail but she posted bail and was released at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, a jail spokeswoman said.

She is scheduled to appear in Marin County Superior Court on July 26.
