11:09AM: Two men were shot in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood early this morning, and police have arrested a man and detained three other people in connection with the shooting, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired at Grant and Columbus avenues at about 1:30 a.m., police Officer Albie Esparza said.
Two men in their 20s were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds to their lower extremities. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Esparza said.
Police initially believed that three people were shot, but later determined only two were struck by the gunfire, he said.
Plainclothes police officers responding to the shooting tried to stop at least one fleeing suspect, who allegedly turned and aimed a gun at the officers, Esparza said.
The man did not fire his weapon, but at least one officer fired a shot in response. No one was struck by the shot, according to Esparza.
The man was taken into custody and the firearm was recovered by police. He was arrested for weapons-related offenses, and investigators are trying to determine if he was responsible for the shooting, Esparza said.
Police also detained three additional people for questioning in connection with the shooting, he said.

Plainclothes police officers who witnessed the shooting attempted to stop at least one fleeing suspect, Esparza said. The suspect reportedly turned and shot at the officers, prompting at least one officer to fire back.
No one was hit in the exchange of gunfire, Esparza said. The suspect was taken into custody. A firearm was also collected by police.
It was still unclear at 3 a.m. if one of the three shooting victims could possibly be a suspect, Esparza said. Further suspect information was not yet available.
The shooting was still under investigation at publication time.
