Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony at San Francisco’s Presidio National Cemetery marks the 142nd held in the historic national park, and this year will include a special tribute to veterans of the Korean War.
This year is the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, in which more than 36,000 American servicemen and servicewomen died.
More than 8,000 veterans of the Korean War are among the 35,000 veterans and their dependents buried at Presidio National Cemetery, according to Presidio officials.
During the war, the Presidio’s Letterman Army Hospital cared for many of the injured.
Every Memorial Day, each grave at the cemetery is decorated with an American flag.
The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. with a parade of veterans from the Main Post to the cemetery, where at 11 a.m. there will be remembrances, a 21-gun salute and a wreath laying with Korean Consul General Jeong-Gwan Lee.
Mayor Gavin Newsom, U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, state Sen. Leland Yee, state Assemblywoman Fiona Ma and U.S. Army Brigadier General James Cook are also scheduled to attend.
