Traffic safety is a policing priority in the Richmond District. Officers take enforcement action district wide, especially on and near major thoroughfares. In addition, in the coming weeks we will be giving the following locations some additional enforcement attention based on complaints:

Balboa Street between 25th and 28th Avenues
25th Avenue between Anza and Fulton
11th Avenue and Cabrillo
10th Avenue and Fulton
34th Avenue and Clement
32nd Avenue and Fulton

Our goal is to reduce the number of injury accidents in the District and make neighborhoods safer for everyone. During the past week, there were 26 traffic accidents, 7 involving injuries. There were also 6 arrests for driving under the influence.

Noteworthy Arrests

On 07/04/09 at 10:15pm plainclothes officers were in the area of 41st Avenue and Fulton when they heard a series of loud explosions coming from inside Golden Gate Park. As the officers were heading into the park they saw a bright fireball shooting 500 feet into the air. They saw 4-5 cars parked along JFK Drive and a group of people standing on the sidewalk. They observed a suspect walking away from a pile of expended fireworks carrying a bag. A GG Park Ranger arrived on scene and the onlookers quickly left the scene. The suspect was detained and numerous fireworks were found in the bag the suspect was carrying and in the trunk of the suspect’s vehicle. These fireworks were classified as dangerous fireworks/pyrotechnics and officers from Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit were called to take custody of the fireworks. A 21-year-old male was charged with being in possession of flammable or explosive devices.

On 07/07/09 at 2:15am officers responded to a call at 38th Avenue and Balboa regarding three males that had broken a parking meter off of its base and were carrying it away. Officers located the three males, all of whom had been drinking in a local bar. The officers also found the parking meter. One of the males said he was keeping it for “memorabilia” and another offered to re-install the meter and repair the sidewalk that had been broken when the meter was pulled out of the ground. The three males, all in their early 20’s, were charged with theft.

On 07/08/09 at 4:25pm plainclothes officers went to a residence on the 300 block of 17th Avenue. An occupant in the home was on parole and the officers were going to conduct a parole search. The female resident informed the officers that the subject had moved and the only other person in the home was her new boyfriend who was also on parole. The new boyfriend had an outstanding warrant for a parole violation and he was taken into custody.

Noteworthy Incidents

Between 06/28/09 and 07/05/09 on the 3700 block of Washington Street a suspect entered into a residence by smashing a rear patio window. The amount of the loss is unknown at this time.

On 07/04/09 between 6:30am and 8:00pm on the 7100 block of Geary a suspect entered into an apartment garage and took a bike and backpack. There were no signs of forced entry.

On 07/04/09 between 3:00pm and 5:30pm on the 1000 block of Balboa
, a suspect entered a residence and took game consoles and televisions. There were no signs of forced entry.

Between 07/04/09 at 11:30pm and 07/05/09 at 7:00am on the 1500 block of Lake Street a suspect entered into a garage and took two bikes. There were no signs of forced entry.

Between 07/05/09, 8:00am and 07/09, 2:30pm on the 200 block of Collins, a suspect gained entry into an apartment garage and took a bike and 5 surf boards. There were no signs of forced entry.

On 07/05/09 at 4:42pm a victim had just exited his vehicle that was parked on the 2400 block of Clement Street. He noticed a dark blue van parked in a driveway partially blocking the sidewalk. As he continued walking, someone from behind said “Hello” and the victim turned around and saw a suspect pointing a gun at him. The suspect told the victim to give him his money and the victim complied. The suspect then fled to the passenger side of the dark blue van, which then fled west on Clement Street. The suspect was a male 30-40 years wearing a black jacket and had gold teeth.

On 07/06/09 at 3:15am a victim was waiting for a bus on the northeast corner of Geary and Park Presidio. He was suddenly approached by one suspect who pushed the victim onto the glass wall of the bus shelter. As the suspect reached into the victim’s jacket pocket a second suspect came from behind and pushed the victim to the ground. The second suspect held the victim down while the first went through his pants and jacket, taking his cell phone and backpack. The suspects were described as males in their 20’s, one with a black hat and dark sweatshirt, the other with a shaved head and dark t-shirt.

On 07/06/09 between 10:00am and 2:00pm on the 2300 block of Post Street a suspect entered an apartment and took a laptop, jewelry and cash. A rear window may have been left unlocked.

Between 07/06/09 at 5:30pm and 07/07/09 at 8:00am on the 4500 block of Fulton Street, a suspect entered into a garage and took a bike. There were no signs of forced entry.

On 07/07/09 between 7:15am and 5:30pm on the 400 block of 10th Avenue a suspect entered into a garage and took a backpack, clothing and jewelry. There were no signs of forced entry.

Between 07/07/09 at 5:00pm and 07/08/09 at 8:00am on the unit block of Sea View Terrace, a suspect entered into a detached garage and took a laptop and phone from a vehicle parked inside. There were no signs of forced entry.

Between 07/08/09 at 3:00pm and 07/09/09 11:00am on the 400 block of 18th Avenue, a suspect went into the playground and damaged and uprooted trees. The suspect also made deep etches on several of the park’s clubhouse windows.
