Next spring construction crews will begin boring a 5-mile long, 14-foot high tunnel underneath the San Francisco Bay, which will replace the aging pipes that are used to bring water from Yosemite National Park to the residents of San Francisco. So there you have it, another reason to be depressed that you went with the liberal arts degree instead of one in engineering. You will never be able to say words like “seismic” and “bedrock” with total mastery and finesse.
The $347 million project was partly approved due to declarations by experts (i.e. engineers) that there is a 63% chance of a major earthquake in the Bay Area within the next 30 years. Another reason to move to Portland to get that engineering degree.
So the engineers made the prediction that the engineers will now be paid to prepare for, and they get to go all Bruce Willis in Armageddon and ride a giant corkscrew through the bedrock of the bay. Life, as the poet says, is not fair.
