10:20 PM: Eastbound lanes of San Francisco’s Broadway Tunnel have reopened tonight, about 11 hours after a big-rig failed to clear the tunnel’s ceiling, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 10:53 a.m., according to police.

Public Works Department spokeswoman Gloria Chan said the truck was able to clear the entrance to the tunnel, but because the tunnel’s ceiling becomes lower inside, it then hit the ceiling.

Chan said the truck scraped off light fixtures and tiles from the tunnel ceiling.

She said eastbound lanes of the tunnel reopened at about 9:45 p.m. after crews determined there was no structural damage. Crews are expected to return to the tunnel at a later date to confirm there is no structural damage and work on other repairs.

According to Chan, 13-foot-6-inch clearance signs are clearly posted at each end of the tunnel.

The tunnel remained open in the westbound direction throughout the day.

DPW crews are still cleaning up debris and making sure the tunnel is safe for drivers. No injuries were reported in the crash.

Public Works crews had earlier hoped to reopen the eastbound lanes by about 6 p.m., but police spokeswoman Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said crews are now estimating reopening at 8 p.m.

11:28 AM: A big-rig crash in San Francisco’s Broadway Tunnel late this morning has closed the eastbound lanes to traffic, police said.

The crash was reported at 10:53 a.m. near the tunnel’s Hyde Street entrance.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said the big-rig driver tried to enter the tunnel and hit the ceiling, causing debris to fall.

“There’s a piece of ceiling hanging down from the tunnel,” Tomioka said.

Crews are attempting to remove the big-rig without causing further damage, she said.

There is no estimate for when the eastbound lanes will be cleared, but the westbound direction of the tunnel remains open, Tomioka said.
