New delays have been made to the construction of the Bay Bridge that can possibly set back the date of its completion, a spokesperson announced.
According to The Chronicle, steel parts for the single- tower suspension span’s deck and tower segments are held up in Shanghai, China, at the Zhenhua Port Machinery Company.
Though some of the parts were expected to arrive this month, they may not arrive until September, says executive director of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Steve Heminger.
At this point it is unknown whether or not the bridge will meet its completion date in early 2013, but Bay Area transportation officials are concerned this hold-up will push back the intended date.
Transit commission spokesperson Randy Rentschler said, “I want to be cautious. It’s too early to tell. I can’t say, ‘Yes, it’s likely to cause delay,’ or, ‘No, it’s not likely to cause delay.”
Rentschler also stated that the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the state Department of Transportation and the head of the state transit commission plan to travel to China in August to address the issue directly.
