Everyone’s favorite volunteer public policy consultant, Akit, has curated a list of 21 of San Francisco’s more arcane municipal rules and regulations. Some of my faves:
— Ageism! You can be fined $5-50 for selling baby chicks, ducks, and rabbits. Grownups are OK.
— Cycling while iPodding? You’re breaking the law. (Admittedly, this isn’t a “wacky” law, per se, but given how many folks on bikes seem to be headphoning it in, I am surprised!)
— “Replica or facsimile hypodermic needles or syringes”? Denied! It’s “unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to sell, or, for purposes of sale, to exchange, give, loan, furnish, display, or market, or to utilize for promoting the sale of any merchandise” fake ones. Stick to real needles, kids.
You can read Akit’s entire list here.
If you’re like Akit, you can wander around our municipal code yourself to find your own to 21 (though, if you’re really like Akit, you probably have this site bookmarked!). Like the one about squirrel monkeys. Or the ENTIRE fortunetelling section. My god, this is addictive.
