The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for the Bay Area for Thursday as large swells coupled with a high tide are expected to roll along the coast.
Beginning late Wednesday, swells gradually increased, and will reach peaks of 15 to 16 feet Thursday, according to the weather service.
The swells are expected to coincide with a high tide of 6.1 feet shortly after 11 a.m. near the Golden Gate Bridge, the weather service reported.
Though flooding will likely not be an issue, swells could reach heights of 17 to 19 feet during the day Thursday.
The annual Mavericks Surf Contest near Half Moon Bay will not be held Thursday, despite previous speculation that the forecast of large waves could mark the beginning of the competition, contest co-director Katherine Clark said this morning.
