San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi’s driver’s license has been suspended by the Department of Motor Vehicles for failing to properly report an accident that occurred in October, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s department announced this evening.
Mirkarimi only learned of his suspended license today, according to spokesman Kenya Briggs, and that happened as a result of media inquiries.
Mirkarimi is still allowed to drive for employment duties, however, according to Briggs.
The incident in question reportedly occurred Oct. 2, 2014, while Mirkarimi was driving a city-owned vehicle. No one was injured and the city’s car wasn’t damaged, but Mirkarimi gave his personal insurance information to the other driver, Briggs said.
Mirkarimi reported the accident to his insurance company, who said they would take care of it, and his “coverage has always remained in effect,” according to Briggs.
In June, a San Francisco police officer issued Mirkarimi a traffic citation. That’s been resolved, but the sheriff was not advised of any problems with his driver’s license during that process, Briggs said.
Mirkarimi is working to resolve the problems with his license, and reportedly trying to determine why his insurance company didn’t submit a report to the DMV. He is “expediting the resolution,” according to Briggs.
Further details about the nature of the incident that led to the suspension of Mirkarimi’s license, or when that suspension went into effect, were not immediately available.
