Weekend Traffic And Transit Disruptions: Daylight Saving Time, Chinese New Year Parade, Sunday Streets

Start of Daylight Saving Time

On Sunday:  Daylight Saving Time will commence at 2 a.m., requiring clocks to be set forward one hour.

All Muni service will continue to operate on standard time through the end of Owl service*. Muni schedules will adjust to daylight saving time with the start of regular service on Sunday.

Chinatown Community Street Fair

On Saturday and Sunday:  The Chinatown Community Street Fair will be held.  The street fair will take place along Grant Avenue between Clay and Broadway streets from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdayand from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The following street closures will be required for the Street Fair from 11 p.m., Friday to 11 p.m.,Sunday.

  • Grant Avenue between California Street and Broadway
  • Pacific Avenue between Columbus Avenue and Stockton Street
  • Jackson Street between Stockton and Kearny streets
  • Washington Street between Stockton and Kearny streets
  • Intersections:  Jackson Street, Washington Street and Pacific Street on Grant Avenue
  • All alleys in the area bounded by California Street, Stockton Street, Broadway and Kearny Street

There will be heavy traffic in the area.  Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time.

The following Muni routes will be affected:

  • 10 Townsend
  • 12 Folsom/Pacific

Little League Parade

On Saturday:  San Francisco Little League Baseball will open the 2015 season with a parade from the Presidio to Marina Middle School.

Beginning at 10 a.m. the parade will leave the Presidio Main Post through the Gorgas Gate, turn south on Lyon Street and proceed east on Union Street to Laguna Street, north to Chestnut Street, west to Divisadero, through the neighborhood and back to Bay Street to disband in the school parking lot.

San Francisco Police Officers will monitor the parade for necessary street closures.

The following Muni routes will be affected:

  • 22 Fillmore
  • 28 19th Avenue
  • 30 Stockton
  • 43 Masonic
  • 45 Union

Chinese New Year Parade

On Saturday:  The Chinese New Year Parade will start from 2nd and Market streets at 5:15 p.m.  The parade will travel west on Market Street, north on Kearny Street, west on Post Street, north on Powell Street, east on Sutter Street, north on Kearny Street to Columbus Avenue.  The parade will disperse on Columbus Avenue between Pacific and Washington streets.

Staging of the floats will begin at 10 a.m. in the parking lane of Main Street between Market and Harrison streets.  The following street closures will be required:

From 3 p.m. to approximately 5:15 p.m.:

  • 2nd Street between Market and Mission streets

From 4 p.m. to approximately 7 p.m.:

  • Market Street between Beale and 3rd streets
  • Main Street between Harrison and Market streets

Starting at 4 p.m. to approximately 11 p.m., Post Street between Mason and Market streets will be closed for camera positioning for TV stations.

Cross traffic will be allowed within the staging area until 4:45 p.m.

From 4 p.m. to approximately 9 p.m., the following closures will be required:

  • Geary Street between Montgomery and Mason streets
  • Post Street between Mason and Kearny streets
  • Powell Street between Geary and Bush streets
  • Sutter Street between Mason and Montgomery streets
  • Kearny Street between Geary Street and Columbus Avenue/Pacific Street
  • The Stockton Street Tunnel

Traffic along Market Street between 4th and 2nd streets will be diverted beginning at 4 p.m.:

  • Westbound to Howard Street
  • Eastbound to Folsom Street

Mission Street between 1st and 4th streets will be designated for transit only until Market Street re-opens.

After the parade clears an area and the streets have been cleaned, they will be opened to traffic.

Sunday Streets – Embarcadero

On Sunday:  The Sunday Streets season-opening event will be held along northbound of The Embarcadero from King Street to Fisherman’s Wharf. The 3-mile route will open the roadway to people walking, bicycling and other recreational activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Sunday Streets is free and open to the public.

The information booths for the event will be located at Pier 27 and the Brannan Street Wharf.  The information booth is where participants can get details about activities along the event route as well as bike repair services and activities.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., northbound of The Embarcadero will be closed for the event and will be re-opened by 4:30 p.m.

Southbound of The Embarcadero will remain open throughout the event.  Motorists should expect heavy traffic around the event area and should allow extra travel time.

Motorists heading to the Fisherman’s Wharf area can use an alternate route by travelling north on 3rd Street, to Kearny Street, then Columbus Avenue and into the Wharf area.  Enforcement personnel from the SFMTA will be on site to direct traffic. Local access will be allowed to the piers via southbound Embarcadero or cross streets.

Taxi and tour bus pick up and drop off for the Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 area will be on Grant Avenue, between The Embarcadero and North Point Street.

As a reminder, parking meters in the Fisherman’s Wharf area and along The Embarcadero Roadway are enforced seven days per week throughout the year except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
