Suspicious Package in Mission District Deemed Hoax Device

Police have cleared the scene in San Francisco’s Mission District where a suspicious package reported Friday night was discovered to be a hoax device.

Police said the device, located in the area of 23rd and Barlett streets just before 8 p.m., appeared to be a “legitimate active device” that had a timer, pipes and wires.

A police bomb squad unit rendered the device safe, and investigators determined it was a hoax device, police said.

Residents in the area were asked to shelter in place and the area was closed off until the incident was resolved.

Police cleared the scene around 11 p.m.
