Police in San Francisco this morning are investigating a Thursday night officer-involved shooting in the Mission District that left a robbery suspect dead.
Officers responded to the area of 24th and Folsom streets around 9:45 p.m. in reference to call about a Hispanic man with a knife.
Police said two plainclothes officers came upon the scene, saw the suspect with a knife, drew their firearms and ordered the suspect to drop the knife.
The situation escalated, and the officers, who had their department issued stars visible on their clothes, fired at the suspect between four and six times, police said.
The suspect was shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the suspect was attempting to rob a man of his bicycle when the officers intervened. The victim was not injured during the robbery attempt.
The two officers will be placed on paid administrative leave as the incident is investigated by the San Francisco Police Department’s homicide detail, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and San Francisco Police Department Internal Affairs, police said.
The suspect’s identity will be released once the medical examiner’s office officially identifies the man and after his next-of-kin has been notified, police said.
The police department is planning to hold a town hall meeting at some point early next week in reference to the shooting.
