A U.S. Coast Guard team evacuated a crewmember from a tugboat in the Bay on Monday after mariners reported the crewmember’s stroke-like symptoms, Coast Guard officials said.
Coast Guard crews were notified of the person’s symptoms at 12:06 p.m. after the person starting receiving medical attention aboard the Point Vicente, a 98-foot tugboat conducting a fuel transfer with a container ship about 1.5 miles east of Hunter’s Point in San Francisco.
Personnel aboard the Liberian-flagged commercial vessel ANL Bindaree provided initial medical attention to the crewmember, according to the Coast Guard.
A Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco MH-65 rescue helicopter crew overheard the calls for help while training in the area and responded. The team airlifted the individual back to Air Station San Francisco to be taken to a hospital.
“I am glad we were able to quickly come to this individual’s aid and get them to advanced medical attention,” Coast Guard Commander Capt. Greg Stump said in a statement. “The ANL Bindaree’s quick notification of the incident to the Coast Guard and their initial medical attention was second-to-none.”
