Pair Arraigned in Fatal Mission District Stabbing

Two men arrested on suspicion of stabbing another man to death in San Francisco’s Mission District over the weekend made their initial court appearance today to face murder charges.

Suspects Andres Novelo, 26, and Josue Chan-Perez, 31, were arrested in connection with the killing of 25-year-old Berkeley resident Casey Bissell, who was found suffering from at least one stab wound near 18th and Valencia streets around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Bissell was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Both Novelo and Chan-Perez were arrested on Sunday and booked into jail on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy and aggravated assault, police said.

A Spanish-speaking interpreter assisted the suspects, who are scheduled to return to court to enter a plea on Friday.

Novelo’s bail was set at $10 million, while Chan-Perez’s bail was set at $8 million.

Bissell’s death was the second to occur early Sunday morning in the Mission District.

At about 2 a.m., 26-year-old Camilo Senchyna Beltran was fatally shot about two blocks away, near 20th and Mission streets, police said.

Anyone with information about either homicide is encouraged to call San Francisco police at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with “SFPD” in the message.
