Cause of Death Remains Unknown for Man Found Unresponsive in North Beach

An investigation is underway into the cause of death of a 46-year-old man found unresponsive earlier this week in the doorway of a building in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood.

Stephen Coronell did not have a known address of residency when he was found unresponsive on Tuesday morning, according to the San Francisco medical examiner’s office.

San Francisco police Officer Grace Gatpandan said officers received a request for a well-being check in the 2000 block of Powell Street between Chestnut and Lombard streets shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Officers responded to the scene and found Coronell unresponsive in the doorway of a building. Medics arrived and pronounced him deceased at the scene, Gatpandan said.

No signs indicating foul play or suspicious or natural causes have been determined. The cause of his death is “unknown” but remains under investigation, according to Gatpandan.
