A funeral for a 28-year-old man shot in San Francisco’s Mission District last weekend will be held Monday, according to the victim’s family.
Benjamin Martinez, of San Francisco, was shot around 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3000 block of 16th Street, according to police.
According to police, the suspect walked up to Martinez and shot him several times in the upper body before fleeing.
Police have yet to arrest the male suspect.
On an online YouCaring fundraising page, family and friends have raised $340 as of this afternoon to benefit his family and help pay for funeral services and other expenses.
The family hopes to reach $5,000.
On the site, organizers wrote that the family is “unfortunately financially unprepared for the costly arrangements that are required to give their loved one a proper service.”
A viewing service will be held Saturday and Sunday at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary in Daly City ahead of Monday’s 10 a.m. funeral at St. Peter’s Catholic Church at 1200 Florida St. in San Francisco.
On the site, Martinez, who went by “Benny,” is remembered as a loving brother and son, who left behind his brothers and sisters Rich, Carlos, Lou, Aidan, and Nora, his father, Ernie Escobar, and his grandfather, Robert Martinez.
His mother, Leticia Ramirez, was killed in 2001.
On the site, family members wrote, “He loved and cared for his brothers and sister very much. He was a big part of his family and he will be missed tremendously. We know he is at peace and home with his mother.”
