Dolores Park Bell to be Moved for Renovation Project

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced on Wednesday the relocation of the replica Mexican Liberty Bell at Mission Dolores Park.

The bell, which was installed in the park in 1966, will be moved approximately 25 feet so the surrounding area can be leveled and made accessible to people with disabilities, according to the department.

The bell relocation is part of a $12.4 million Mission Dolores Park renovation project. The project, which began in March, is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2015.

The bell is a replica of the bell rung by the Rev. Miguel Hidalgo in Dolores, Mexico on the morning of Sept. 16, 1810 when the Mexican people were seeking independence from Spain, according to the department.

The project is focusing on improvements to park facilities, sports areas and the general infrastructure.
