Disaster Drill Planned For Waters Off Pier 1 Today

Divers will be inspecting piers along San Francisco’s waterfront today as part of a disaster drill to hone and showcase the skills of local and federal responders.

The drill, which simulates a response to a catastrophic earthquake, was initially scheduled to take place during Fleet Week but was postponed because of the federal government shutdown.

Participating entities will include the San Francisco police and fire departments, the city’s Department of Emergency Management, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The activity will be taking place in the water off of Pier 1.

Tactical diving demonstrations are scheduled for midday.
