Bay Area Legislators Shelter In Place After Shots Fired Near US Capitol

Congresswoman Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, was among the legislators on lockdown today after shots were fired near the U.S. Capitol.

Lee’s spokeswoman Carrie Adams said the congresswoman was in the Capitol building and staff members were sheltering in place at the Rayburn House Office Building where Lee and other legislators have their offices.

The shooting occurred around 2:20 p.m. EST, and an alarm went off inside the Rayburn building a short time later alerting occupants of an emergency, Adams said.

News reports have indicated that a woman was shot and killed by police after a car chase that began outside the White House and ended hear the Hart Senate Office Building.

The lockdown was lifted at about 3:10 p.m., Capitol police said.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted that her office was also in lockdown but did not provide further details.
