“Smoking Accident” Caused Japantown Fire That Displaced Seven

A police officer rescued a woman from the third floor of a burning residence in San Francisco’s Japantown neighborhood this afternoon, an assistant fire chief said.

The two-alarm fire was reported at 1:26 p.m. in the 2000 block of Pine Street, which is near Fillmore, fire officials said.

Before firefighters arrived police officers assisted a woman trapped on the third floor and assisted her out of the building, temporary Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Smith said.

That woman was treated at a hospital for minor injuries along with the officer. A firefighter also suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze, Smith said.

As a result of the damage, seven residents were displaced. The fire is believed to have been caused by a smoking accident, Smith said.
