Supe Drops Proposal To Rename SFO After Harvey Milk, Says It Was Too Divisive

A proposal to rename San Francisco International Airport after assassinated Supervisor Harvey Milk is being dropped by its author, who said today that the idea had become too divisive.

Supervisor David Campos, who introduced the proposal in January, said today that he will seek only to rename a terminal at the airport instead.

Milk, 48, who was openly gay and championed gay rights while on the Board of Supervisors, was fatally shot along with Mayor George Moscone by former Supervisor Dan White at City Hall in 1978.

Campos said he met with hundreds of people to discuss the legislation.

“People did believe we should honor Harvey … and they wanted it done following a process that was unifying and brought people together. I believe this proposal does that,” Campos said of the scaled-back terminal idea.

The initial proposal had drawn opposition from the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, which said it would be too costly to rename the entire airport and would dilute the airport’s brand recognition.

Campos said he plans to introduce new legislation next week that would create a committee appointed by the board and Mayor Ed Lee to recommend which of the airport’s terminals should be named after Milk.

The committee would also consider whether other sites at the airport should be renamed after other people, and would have three months to return its recommendations to the board, he said.

Campos told the board that the new ordinance is “consistent with what Harvey Milk was all about,” saying “he worked to make sure members of other communities were represented as well.”

  • It was not a good idea to begin with and a waste of time or S.F.Supervisors who have a lot more important business to deal with. This was Harvey’s nephew idea. He thinks gay elected officials should only spend time naming a battleship,an airport and a U.S,Postal Stamp after his Uncle. Harvey has been honored for getting the highest civilian Award from President Obama,A California State Holiday and in the neighborhood where he was known as the The Mayor of Castro Street… A Plaza,A Public School and a Library named in his honor.

Let me know when Campos gets serious about the eviction epidemic in his district and about finally opening the queer homeless shelter on S. Van Ness. If he put half as much energy into the housing crisis in his neighborhood as he does trying to wrap himself in Harvey Milk’s name, and run for Assembly, Campos might win some votes and that what he wants most of all.

Naming airports after people is just plain stupid — it’s as stupid for John Wayne as it is for Ronald Reagan and as it would have been for Harvey Milk. The only thing that emerged from this process was an overwhelming sense of despair brought about by the realization of just how poorly Campos performs his role as city supervisor.

this was nothing more than a gimmick to help his campaign. they wanted to run a campaign, raise a bunch of money and build a list so they could use it in 2014. I’m sure he is only pulling back because they realized it was going to hurt the assembly campaign not because of any care about how to honor Harvey Milk (who already has several things named after him already).

by the way, isn’t it strange he ran for re-election, knowing that he was going to try and ditch the Board for the assembly in 2012? seems rather disingenuous to me. I mean, his own people admitted as much in print at the SF Weekly.
