Bike Cop Injured In Market Street Solo Crash

A San Francisco police officer on a bicycle was injured when he crashed while responding to a report of a shoplifter this afternoon, a police spokesman said.

The incident began at 12:37 p.m. when there was a report of a shoplifter resisting an officer at a business at 799 Market St., police spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychak said. Ross Dress for Less is located at that address.

The officer requested backup, and three bicycle officers responded, Andraychak said.

As the officers were crossing Market and Fourth streets, one lost traction on his bike and fell to the pavement. He was taken to a hospital where he remained this afternoon, Andraychak said. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The shoplifting suspect, who was on parole, was eventually taken into custody, Andraychak said.
