A San Francisco supervisor is looking into changing the name of a street near City Hall after its namesake made anti-gay remarks earlier this month.
Supervisor Jane Kim said she is seeking to rename Lech Walesa Street, a small alleyway located between Grove and Hayes streets and Van Ness Avenue and Polk Street.
Walesa is a Polish politician who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 after co-founding the Solidarity independent trade union movement in Poland.
However, he drew criticism after saying in a TV interview on March 1 that gay people should not be allowed to hold prominent political posts.
Kim, whose district includes Lech Walesa Street, said that in light of the comments, she is has contacted the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to learn about the process for renaming the street.
Lech Walesa Street, formerly Ivy Street, is home to a transgender clinic at the Tom Waddell Health Center.
