San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee today wrapped up a game of City Hall dominoes that was set in motion in last November’s election by swearing in a new assessor-recorder and District 4 supervisor.
Carmen Chu, who had served as that district’s supervisor since 2007, today became the city’s assessor-recorder.
Katy Tang, 29, Chu’s legislative aide for the last five years, was sworn in to replace her boss. District 4 includes the Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods on the western side of the city.
The openings were created in November when the previous assessor-recorder, Phil Ting, was elected to the state Assembly.
Lee said he appreciates the work of both women, who “put our residents first and foremost.”
He said Chu will bring the “same level of budget expertise and prudence” to the assessor-recorder’s office as she had to the board, where she chaired the budget and finance committee.
Chu joked, “I look forward to bringing in the money and seeing how you all spend it.”
The mayor said that after deciding to appoint Chu to the new office, he talked to District 4 residents about who should replace her.
“They asked for continuity, they asked for dependability … they asked for Katy Tang as their supervisor,” Lee said.
Tang thanked Chu for mentoring her during their years working together at City Hall.
“She set such a great example for me,” she said.
Tang will follow in Chu’s footsteps as a board appointee–Chu was also 29 when then-Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed her to the board in 2007 to replace former Supervisor Ed Jew, who was suspended and later convicted of state and federal charges including mail fraud and bribery.
Chu then won elections in 2008 and 2010 to retain the seat.
Both Tang and Chu will face elections this November to retain their new posts.
