4:32 PM: A two-alarm fire at an abandoned building next to the San Francisco Zoo has been contained, a San Francisco fire official said this afternoon.

The fire, reported around 1 p.m., occurred in the old Fleishhacker Pool building, which is located next to the zoo parking lot, according to San Francisco Zoo officials.

Fire officials, however, indicated the fire started in a pump house adjacent to the pool building rather than in the main building. Calls to the incident commander to clarify have not yet been returned.

The zoo closed early today at 2 p.m. in response to the fire, largely due to parking and logistical issues. No visitors, employees or animals were injured, however, and the zoo will reopen tomorrow, officials said in an online statement.

The fire, contained around 4 p.m., caused the building’s roof to collapse, a fire dispatcher said.

Fire officials have said in media interviews that a firefighter was injured battling the blaze, but the dispatcher could not confirm this.

The building is the last remnant of the Fleishhacker Pool, an enormous swimming pool that once occupied the area now filled in and used for zoo parking. It has sat empty and derelict for decades.

There were no current or future plans to use the building, according to Connie Chan, a spokeswoman for San Francisco’s Department of Rec and Park.

2:49 PM: Firefighters are still at the scene of a two-alarm fire near the San Francisco Zoo this afternoon, a San Francisco fire official said.

As of 2:30 p.m., the fire appears to be at the Old Fleishacker Pool building near the zoo, which is located at the foot of Sloat Boulevard.

The fire was reported around 1 p.m., fire officials said.

The building where the fire has yet to be controlled is older and has a tiled roof, a fire official said.

The former pool house is adjacent to the zoo.

Information about any injuries was not immediately available.

According To the SF Zoo’s Twitter account, “The Zoo is closed today as of 2:00 p.m.”
