San Francisco transit officials and cycling advocates are launching a campaign today to provide free bicycle lights to riders in an effort to improve safety on city streets.
The “Light up the Night” campaign, a joint effort by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, is targeting bikes without front and rear lights.
Starting today and continuing into December, those participating in the annual campaign will distribute and install the lights and hand out safety information to riders.
A white front light and red rear reflector or light are required by state law when riding a bicycle at night. Light-colored, bright or reflective clothing is also encouraged.
The campaign “is a great way to ensure that both new and experienced bicycle commuters are safe and visible during the darkest time of the year”–the end of daylight saving time, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition executive director Leah Shahum said in a statement.
The lights were purchased with sales tax revenue from the San Francisco County Transportation Authority. Organizers of the giveaway have not disclosed where or when the bike lights will be given out.
