Improvements to a park in San Francisco’s Hunters Point neighborhood were celebrated today by Mayor Ed Lee and other city officials who also touted the project as an example of how the city can be beautified with voter-approved bond measures.
Heron’s Head Park, located at the intersection of Jennings Street and Cargo Way, now features an off-leash dog run and a new dedicated bike lane leading up to the park, among other improvements unveiled today, Lee said.
He said the project, funded by a voter-approved 2008 bond measure to improve the city’s parks, “opens this place up for even more use” and will be more accessible for people living in the southeast part of the city.
Lee said other city parks also need improvements that would be funded by another parks bond measure on this Tuesday’s ballot.
Proposition B would allow San Francisco to issue $195 million in bonds to renovate parks citywide. The measure requires two-thirds approval by voters.
“We have to take care of our infrastructure,” Lee said. “We’re loving our parks to death.”
The 24-acre Heron’s Head Park–named because of its resemblance to a heron’s head when viewed from above–was created in 1999 and lies on Port of San Francisco property right next to a large Recology recycling facility at Pier 96.
Port executive director Monique Moyer said Heron’s Head “is one of the greatest places in the city” because “this is a working port, but it’s also a place for habitat.”
More than 100 bird species inhabit the area. The park also contains the EcoCenter, a 1,500-square-foot facility used to educate the public about renewable energy and pollution reduction.
The building operates off of the city’s energy grid and is powered by solar panels and wind turbines.
