San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and other city officials today celebrated the opening of a new family resource center at the Sunnydale public housing complex in the city’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood.
The center, located at 1704 Sunnydale Ave., is part of the city’s effort to reduce violence in the neighborhood following a violent month this July in which multiple fatal shootings occurred there, Lee said.
“It’s a signal to people that violence is not the answer,” he said.
The center is a satellite of the main Visitation Valley Family Resource Center located at 50 Raymond Ave.
The centers are funded by First Five San Francisco and the city’s Department of Children, Youth and Their Families and Human Services Agency.
“Ensuring the well-being of families is the cornerstone of our society,” said Laurel Kloomok, director of First Five San Francisco.
The center will “provide a warm, safe, fun place for families to go,” Kloomok said.
Services at the center will target families at risk of child abuse, truancy, neglect, mental health problems and domestic violence.
