target-logo.pngMayor Ed Lee and other dignitaries will attend a private event Tuesday to mark the opening of San Francisco’s first Target store.

The CityTarget store, in the Metreon complex at Fourth and Mission streets, opens for business on Wednesday, with a grand opening event scheduled for Sunday.

CityTarget stores, located in densely populated urban areas, are about two-thirds the size of the retailer’s normal stores and offer smaller items that can be transported more easily.

The mayor will be joined by Anne Wilson, CEO of United Way of the Bay Area, and Target officials at the ceremony Tuesday evening.

Target held a job fair for the San Francisco store in August that drew hundreds of people.

The company also plans to open a second store in San Francisco sometime in 2013 at Geary Boulevard and Masonic Avenue.
