greatH_lede.jpg3:18 PM: San Francisco’s Great Highway reopened this afternoon after being shut down earlier today because of excess sand in the roadway, city Department of Public Works officials said.

The road was closed between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way while crews removed the sand, city officials said shortly before 10:30 a.m. It reopened just before 2:30 p.m., according to the department.

Sand-related closures occur about 70 times annually on Great Highway, department head Mohammed Nuru said earlier this year.

11:57 AM: San Francisco’s Great Highway was shut down in both directions this morning because of excess sand in the roadway, city Department of Public Works officials said.

The road is closed between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way.

Crews were at the scene late this morning removing the sand, and hope to have the road reopened by 2:30 p.m., according to the Department of Public Works.

Sand-related closures occur about 70 times per year on Great Highway, department head Mohammed Nuru said earlier this year.
