A man was arrested for allegedly attacking another man in a bathroom at AT&T Park during a San Francisco Giants baseball game on Sunday evening, police said today.
Christopher Torii Smith, 26, was arrested in connection with the attack, which was reported at 6:42 p.m. Sunday at the ballpark where the Giants were playing a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said.
He allegedly approached the 21-year-old victim on Sunday in a ballpark bathroom and began hitting him. The victim fell to the ground and Smith continued attacking him, Esparza said.
Smith then fled but officers spotted him and took him into custody in Lefty O’Doul Plaza. He was booked into jail on suspicion of battery, vandalism and public intoxication, Esparza said.
The victim suffered a laceration to his lip in the attack, according to Esparza, who said a motive for the attack had not yet been determined.
Smith, a resident of Grass Valley in the Sierra Foothills, is also awaiting trial in May 2013 on two charges of DUI causing serious injury or death, according to the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office.
He was allegedly under the influence of marijuana on Dec. 30 when he fatally struck two people who were walking in a crosswalk in Incline Village, Nev., Nevada Highway Patrol officials said.
Sunday’s attack comes after San Francisco police stepped up their enforcement efforts at AT&T Park during a previous series in June between the Giants and their rivals from Los Angeles.
As part of their tactics, some officers even dressed as Dodgers fans to try to minimize problems between fans of the two teams.
The efforts come after an incident in Los Angeles last year in which Giants fan Bryan Stow was brutally beaten outside Dodger Stadium. Two men have been arrested for the attack and are awaiting trial while Stow continues to recover from severe head injuries.
