Apple CEO Tim Cook and other company officials announced the new phone’s features at a 10 a.m. event at the center today.

Dozens of gawkers stood outside the building, many of whom were following the announcement on older versions of the iPhone.

“We knew we weren’t going to be in, but just wanted to be here,” said Tim Dunn, who, along with two coworkers, is in town from Cincinnati for a business trip.

The iPhone 5 is said to be thinner and lighter than previous models, with a larger screen and longer battery life, and will feature a new connection port.

Ethan Bresnick, a 13-year-old eighth-grader from Burlingame who was wearing a green shirt bearing the Apple logo, took the day off of school to come to San Francisco for the event.

“It’s my last chance to come to one of these before high school,” said Bresnick, who said he makes short films.

“I’m a huge fan of their marketing and culture,” he said. “It really appeals to the consumer.”

Alexa Maechtel, of Germany, who is on vacation in the Bay Area, said she is eager to get the new version of the phone.

“I work at an IT company, so I have to have the newest stuff,” Maechtel said.

She said she decided to visit San Francisco because, for tech workers, the city and Silicon Valley are “our Mecca.”
