The Port of San Francisco is receiving a $2 million check today, the initial insurance claim payment for a fire that severely damaged Pier 29 in June, according to port officials.
The four-alarm fire caused an estimated $2.4 million in damage to the two-story waterfront building, located at the intersection of The Embarcadero, Sansome and Chestnut streets, fire officials said.
The blaze was apparently caused by welders doing work in the building, which was vacant and being prepared for next year’s America’s Cup sailing race, fire officials said.
The building is slated to house the regatta’s operations staging area.
Port of San Francisco executive director Monique Moyer and Alan Perron, an official with the insurance company AIG, are expected to attend today’s event to present the check to the port.
The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. in front of Pier 29.
