Four different San Francisco Municipal Railway bus lines have been re-routed to accommodate construction on the agency’s Central Subway project.
The southbound routes of the 8X, 8AX and 8BX-Bayshore Express lines, as well as the 91-Owl line, have been changed slightly because of the project to create a new branch of Muni’s T-Third line connecting the city’s South of Market neighborhood to Chinatown.
Before Wednesday, the routes traveled along Stockton Street and then Fourth Street through Union Square and SoMa, but will now travel along Mason Street and Fifth Street, according to Muni officials.
The changes, which will not affect northbound buses on those lines, are meant to accommodate tunnel preparation work and station construction scheduled to start soon.
Muni officials earlier this year also re-routed the 30-Stockton and 45-Union/Stockton routes around the construction area.
The $1.6 billion Central Subway, which is not expected to be completed until 2019, will feature subway stops at Moscone Center and Union Square.
