hale_sheep2.jpgThe San Francisco Zoo has invited the public to the Children’s Zoo today to watch the sheep, rams and alpacas there get a much-needed haircut, zoo officials said.

The annual sheep-shearing event will start at 10:30 a.m. in the Children’s Zoo, when the zoo’s chief sheep shearer David Melcon will begin his work.

Children and guests are invited to watch Melcon shaving the wooly animals to keep them cool for the summer months, followed by demonstrations on how to work with wool.

There will be demonstrations on spindle spinning, needle felting and scarf weaving, and guests can spin the wool themselves and make a friendship bracelet to take home.

The rest of the wool will be sent to a Native American reservation to be used for traditional weavings, zoo officials said.
