San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee today announced the launch of a new plan to support local manufacturing in honor of SFMade Week.
The plan, announced in conjunction with the nonprofit SFMade, which assists and supports the manufacturing sector, calls for the creation of a new manufacturing desk in the city’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development, according to city officials.
The desk would serve as a single point of contact for manufacturing businesses, and assist with issues including permits and incentive programs.
“San Francisco is becoming a national model for innovative local urban manufacturing,” said Lee in a statement. “We are working with SFMade to provide a focused effort and demonstrate our commitment to manufacturers in San Francisco who continue to thrive and produce not only great products, but also great jobs for San Franciscans.”
In addition, the plan will focus on key sectors where the city can compete successfully, including food and beverage, consumer products and rapid prototyping. City officials will work to connect San Franciscans with manufacturing employment opportunities, and work with local manufacturers to launch a marketing campaign promoting San Francisco-made products around the world.
