In honor of Mother’s Day, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department is giving away flowers to moms who visit featured gardens within Golden Gate Park on Sunday.
The first 100 mothers to visit the Conservatory of Flowers, the Japanese Tea Garden or the Botanical Garden will receive flowers at the garden’s entrance.
The Conservatory of Flowers, a Victorian wood and glass structure opened in 1879, is the park’s oldest building and houses rare aquatics and tropical plants.
The Japanese Tea Garden is the oldest such public garden in the country and was created for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, according to park officials.
The Botanical Garden conserves more than 8,000 varieties of plants from around the world, including Chile and Australia, in its 55 acres of landscaped gardens and open spaces.
The department is encouraging families to spend time with their mothers in the park, where they can hop on and off the free shuttles that run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
The shuttles travel between McLaren Lodge and Ocean Beach, with 14 shuttle stops, including the California Academy of Sciences, Spreckels Lake and the Bison Paddock.
