A street in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has been renamed after U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, city officials announced today.
Middle Drive East, a thoroughfare in the eastern part of the park, will now be named Nancy Pelosi Drive, Mayor Ed Lee announced at a news conference this afternoon attended by Pelosi and several other city, state and federal officials.
The street runs between John F. Kennedy Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and passes many popular sites including the California Academy of Sciences and the National AIDS Memorial Grove.
Lee said that “so much of (Pelosi’s) work is reflected in everything we do” in San Francisco, and noted that “it’s very fitting that Nancy Pelosi Drive goes past the AIDS Memorial Grove” since she has been critical to the fight against HIV/AIDS since taking office.
Pelosi, D-San Francisco, has served for 25 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, including a term as the first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the House.
She said that she was grateful to receive the naming honor, especially for a street that connects between ones named after two American icons.
“It’s a very emotional day for me,” she said. “It’s a wonderful honor.”
