Transbay Transit Center project officials will be coordinating with Caltrans over the next year to plan a bus storage facility located under the Bay Bridge west approach.
At a community meeting on the project’s construction activities, Phil Sandri, of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority’s management team, said the negotiations are necessary because the facility will be located on Caltrans right-of-way between Second and Third streets and Stillman and Perry streets.
The storage facility will save transit agencies time and money by allowing them to stow the buses in San Francisco until the evening commute, rather than driving them empty without picking up passengers across the bridge, Sandri said.
The project, part of the $4.1 billion transit hub, is expected to be fully designed by the end of this year and put out to bid by next summer, with construction beginning in July 2013, he said.
A seismic analysis of the proposal will be required to demonstrate that the proposed storage facility will not damage the recently retrofitted approach to the Bay Bridge, according to Sandri.
The Transbay Transit Center, dubbed the “Grand Central of the West,” is replacing the seismically unsafe Transbay Transit Terminal at Mission and First streets, which was built in 1939.
Community meetings for the project are held periodically at the project’s South of Market headquarters.
