sfpd_crimescene.jpgThe San Francisco police department is investigating what they are calling a “suspicious death” that occurred in Golden Gate Park near the children’s playground carousel Friday night.

According to SFPD spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychak, officers from Park Station were called to the area near the carousel and Sharon Art Studio Friday at 7:22 PM.

They arrived to discover a 56 year old man seated on a bench who was demonstrating labored breathing, Andraychak said. The officers called for medical assistance, but as the ambulance was en route, the man lost consciousness. Though officers administered CPR, which paramedics took over when they arrived, the man died at the scene, Andraychak said.

The medical examiner and homicide detail reported to the scene, and the death is being investigated as “suspicious,” Andraychak said.

According to Andraychak, SFPD has information that the man may have been involved in an altercation close to where he was discovered by police.

The identity of the deceased man has yet to be released by the Medical Examiner’s office, but Andraychak confirmed that the man was a San Francisco resident. On Sunday, the Ex and Chron identified the man as 55-year-old Robert Musial.

Andraychak says officers are eager to speak with anyone who might have witnessed the altercation, or with any other information on what might have caused this man’s death. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or send a tip by text message to TIP411.
