Muni Metro subway service has resumed after a man fell or jumped in front of a train at Civic Center Station. According to the STMTA, the man has since died.

According to the SFMTA twitter feed, shuttle buses took Muni Metro service over in both directions after an unidentified man, reports the Chron, was struck by a Muni train on the westbound tracks.

The man was struck by an outbound M-Ocean View train sometime around 11:45 a.m., Muni spokesman Paul Rose told Bay City News.

He suffered severe leg injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he died, Rose said.

According to the Chron, witnesses said the man, who was in a wheelchair, accidentally fell in front of the train, but SF Fire Department spokesperson Mindy Talmadge said “How they got (on the tracks), we don’t know.”

San Francisco police responded to the Civic Center station to investigate the incident, Rose said.

He said investigators are still looking into how the man got onto the tracks.

According to SFist, trains were backed up in both directions, and Muni Transit Director John Haley, reports the Weekly, came to the the scene.

The Muni side of Civic Center Station was closed, and Muni Metro service was shut down between the Embarcadero and West Portal stations. As of 1:44 p.m., Muni Metro service had resumed, according to a release sent by the SFMTA

“Muni bus shuttles will remain in service on the surface until regular service has been restored,” said the release.
